Baghdatis Stays On Heels of Shanghai Rivals PDF Print E-mail

After a bit of an up and down year which saw his world ranking drop to No.22 Marcos Baghdatis is coming good towards the end of the season. After reaching the semi finals in Basle last week, he has just reached the quarter finals of the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over defending champion and No. 4 seed Nikolay Davydenko. The win gives Baghdatis, currently 18th in the ATP 2007 Race, a new total of 300 points and still with an outside chance of qualifying for a spot in Shanghai.

Davydenko struggled on serve in the third round encounter, hitting 10 double faults and losing serve five times to fall in one hour and 13 minutes. Baghdatis now advances to the quarter finals and a meeting with either No. 8 seed Tommy Robredo or No. 11 seed Guillermo Canas, both still contenders for a Shanghai berth.

Afterwards, Marcos told reporters "I'm really happy. I'm very positive right now. That's it. I'm playing well. I had three good wins. I'm very happy.

When asked about his chances of qualifying for Shanghai, he said "I need to win my matches and then it will depend on the results of other players. I don't believe this is my main goal. The only thing I want is to play good matches in order to be in good shape at the beginning of next year."

In what was a tense and tight game right to the end, Limassol’s AEL Basketball team ultimately outplayed Belgium’s Liege team and booked their place firmly in the quarterfinals of the FIBA EuroCup. With the final score of 58-77 and in front of some seventeen Cypriot supporters, including Europ MP Marcos Kyprianos, the visiting side made sure their was no doubt as to why they are current Cyprus champions.

At the end of the first period, AEL looked a bit comfortable with their lead of 10-17 but were given a bit of a challenge when Liege scored 8-0, to go ahead to 18-17. That however, was the last time the home team enjoyed any kind of lead, as the Limassolians walked away at half time leading ten points at 24-34.

Never a dull match, the third quarter was closely contested, with Liege’s Stephane Pelle scoring 10 point, helping his team to a very close 46-48. But it just wasn’t meant to be, even though Pelle’s jump shot at the start of the fourth period took the home team to the equalizer at 48-48.

What happened next was an onslaught in yellow as AEK took firm control and swept past their opponents, starting with a 0-8 run, putting AEL in the driving seat with 48-56 and with the 12-29 score in the last period, including a final-score dunk by Mike King, AEL were on their to the quarters.

“It was something magical,” commented AEL’s General Manager Haris Papadopoulos after the game. “This was a great success for AEL, but also for basketball in Cyprus and is one of the greatest victories so far for a Cypriot basketball team. We managed to win in a very competitive environment and we’ve made Europe not only talk about AEL, but also about Cyprus.”
