Two out of the three British teams playing last night progressed to the quarter final stage of the Champions League.Celtic were facing an uphill battle after losing 2-3 at home to Barcelona in the first leg. The Spanish side got off to a perfect start when Xavi Hernandez flicked the ball over Artur Boruc and into the net after only two minutes. The Scots struggled to contain Barcelona for long spells, but improved as the second half progressed. Unfortunately they were unable to find the back of the net and so exited the Champions League at the same stage for the second successive season.Manchester United had the advantage of a 1-1 away draw from the first leg and Cristiano Ronaldo's 30th goal of the season gave the home side a 2-1 aggregate win over Lyon and a place in the Champions League quarter-finals. Lyon's tactic of defending in numbers frustrated United early on. But Ronaldo broke the deadlock just before the break, when he pounced on a loose ball in the box and squeezed the ball past Gregory Coupet. Although the win was not United’s most stylish performance, it did equal Juventus' Champions League record of 10 straight home wins.Following their 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal knew they had to play well to progress. Arsenal dominated almost throughout the match but had to wait until the 84th minute before Cesc Fabregas fired in a low 30-yard finish. Emmanuel Adebayor then turned in Theo Walcott's cross in injury time to send the holders crashing out. Arsenal became the first English team to beat AC Milan in the San Siro and deservedly earned their place in the last eight of the Champions League. It was another famous Champions League win for Arsenal in Milan, following on from their famous 5-1 win against Inter in November 2005. |
