Cyprus Date for Referees PDF Print E-mail

Europe's top referees and new international match officials travel to Cyprus this week for the latest UEFA winter courses heralding the start of an important few months for European referees. Review and preview
The 16th UEFA Advanced Course for Elite and Premier Referees, and 17th UEFA Introductory Course for International Referees, will both be held in Limassol between Monday and Friday. The 28 elite-category and 24 premier-category referees will be reviewing the first half of the UEFA season and preparing for the second part of the campaign, while the 34 new European match officials will be given a comprehensive insight into the duties and responsibilities that arise in representing UEFA as a referee. EURO preparation
For 12 of the referees, the course is an essential part of their preparation for duty at UEFA EURO 2008™ in Austria and Switzerland this summer. (Click here to see the list of EURO match officials). Thanks to UEFA's help, especially through Belgian referee training expert Werner Helsen, the officials will be given the best possible support in the countdown to this summer's tournament. "Performances at EURO will be the benchmark for all UEFA referees this year, and it is hoped that the high refereeing standards reached at previous EURO finals are maintained," says UEFA General Secretary David Taylor in his welcome message for the Cyprus course. April workshop
"However, such high standards are not reached by accident and the UEFA referees have been preparing for 2008 from the moment UEFA EURO 2004™ ended in Portugal," Mr Taylor adds. "The Elite and Premier Referees [the UEFA categories from where the 12 EURO referees have been selected] have attended seven UEFA courses since then and, after this current one in Cyprus, the selected referees will also attend a final workshop in April." Twenty of the officials involved in the course have already been short-listed by world football body FIFA for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™. The referees will start their preparatory courses with FIFA in the week following the UEFA course. Video examples
As with previous UEFA referee courses, the first half of the current season will come under examination. UEFA's Referees' Committee will present different topics from this season, using video examples, as the basis for the material. The work done in Cyprus will stand the participants in good stead for future assignments in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup and EURO. Fitness test
The introductory course for international referees features officials who are new to the international list in 2008. A fitness test will be held, alongside theoretical and active discussions on referee duties. One important factor will see the referees' committee give instructions on how to apply the laws of the game in a uniform manner. Referee duties
Advice and instructions will also be given on the off-field duties incumbent upon an international referee. These include preparation for a match, and conduct at the match venue and during the journey. An English language examination is also on the agenda – international officials are expected to communicate in sufficiently good English – as is the referee's report form, which is sometimes the only source of match statistics for UEFA or its disciplinary instances.
